Day 1 Launceston – Cradle Mountain

After arriving in Launceston, you’ll meet your Journey Leader, Navigator and fellow travellers. We’re then off to visit the intriguing and endangered Tasmanian Devil at the Tasmania Zoo, where they’re dedicated to protecting the species, before we stop at Josef Chromy Wines for some wine tasting. Then it’s into Cradle Mountain National Park and a 2 night stay at Cradle Mountain Lodge. Located on the edge of the spectacular World Heritage listed Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park, it’s one of Tasmania’s premier wilderness regions. Tonight, enjoy dinner in the Highland Restaurant.

Day 2 Cradle Mountain National Park

Today’s free for you to choose your own adventure from our range of optional activities.

This evening you’ll learn about local produce with wine and cheese tasting and later tonight it’s your choice for dinner. Either a casual dinner in the Tavern or for a more intimate experience your Journey Leader can make a booking for you at the Highland Restaurant.

Optional Activities:
  • Take a guided or self-guided bush walk around beautiful Cradle Mountain or Dove Lake.
  • Go canoeing on Dove Lake (seasonal).
  • Take off on a horse riding adventure.
  • Pamper yourself with a treatment at the Waldheim Alpine Spa.

Day 3 Cradle Mountain – Corinna

Now we’re off journeying further into the wilderness to the Tarkine, where you’ll see spectacular views as we wind our way through the mountains and the valleys. Also known as ‘the forgotten wilderness’, the Tarkine is a place of pristine natural beauty, containing an abundance of natural attractions including the world’s largest tracts of untouched rainforest. It’s also considered to be one the world’s greatest archaeological regions with over 1,000 Aboriginal sites. Our next destination is Corinna, a restored historic settlement set on the Pieman River on the southern boundary of the Tarkine, with access by gravel road and vehicle barge only. We arrive mid-morning so there’ll be plenty of time to try one of the activities that will help you appreciate this pristine wilderness.

Dinner tonight is in Corinna’s rustic restaurant set in the middle of the wilderness.

  • Take the Pieman River Cruise for an intimate connection with the rainforest.
  • Take a self-guided walk through ancient rainforest.
  • Paddle a kayak on the Pieman River.

Day 4 Corinna – Strahan

This morning is yours to do today what you didn’t do yesterday and choose from the range of optional activities.

Early afternoon we leave Corinna taking the barge across the river and then continue through Zeehan to Strahan. Before arriving in Strahan we’ll stop at Ocean Beach to marvel at the dramatic west coastline. Then it’s on to our accommodation at Franklin Manor for a 2 night stay with dinner tonight in the restaurant.

  • Cruise to Pieman Heads and see the spectacular Southern Ocean (includes lunch).
  • Take a self-guided walk through ancient rainforest.
  • Paddle a kayak on the Pieman River.

Day 5 Gordon River

Today you’ll cruise on Macquarie Harbour and the Gordon River, within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. You’ll witness the tranquil beauty as you glide through the Gordon River, alongside ancient rainforests mirrored in the water. Afterwards you’ll learn about our convict history with a visit to historic Sarah Island, before returning early afternoon where the rest of the day is yours to relax or enjoy an optional scenic flight over the Franklin River.

Tonight you are free to enjoy one of the restaurants in town.

Optional Activities:
  • Take a scenic helicopter flight over Huon Pine rainforest, land at the top of Mt. Jukes – one of the highest peaks of the west coast ranges and enjoy views of King River Gorge.
  • Experience the Gordon River region from the air on a seaplane flight including a landing on Gordon River, Sarah Island and the entrance to Macquarie Harbour.

Day 6 Strahan – Hobart

Today we’re heading inland, passing Queenstown, where the unique landscape reflects the history of the region. We’ll continue along the highway where you’ll get to experience the last of the western wilderness, stopping on the way at Nelson Falls for a short rainforest walk. Then we’ll stop at Lake St. Clair to take in the view. Now we’re off back to Hobart where we’ll return to the Lenna of Hobart for our farewell dinner tonight.

Day 7 Hobart

After breakfast it’s time to say farewell to your new friends as your Unknown Wilderness inspiring journey comes to an end.
